So what is this yerba mate stuff, anyway? Well, mate is a traditional South American herb that’s a great alternative to normal teas. When it’s simply dried, it’s herbal and grassy, a little like the best green tea you’ve ever tasted.
When it’s roasted, like in Heart of Darkness, though, mate is toasty and rich – kind of like coffee! Yerba mate is incredibly smooth, without a trace of bitterness even when it’s brewed super-strong. Trust us, you’re going to love mate at first sip!

Preparation
Brew with water barely off the boil (200F) for 5-6 minutes for the first brewing. You can save the leaves in the fridge and steep them again later; increase the steeping time for each successive brewing, up to 3 steeps. Pairs well with sugar, honey, and milk.

About Yerba Mate
Yerba mate is a South American herb with a wonderfully crisp, herbal, “green” flavour. Because of the particular balance of chemicals in yerba mate, although it contains a good bit of caffeine and gives you a buzz, many people find that the energy they get lasts longer and is gentler than a pure caffeine buzz. You can re-steep yerba mate leaves several times – just keep the leaves in the fridge between brewings, and steep them longer each time, up to 3 times. Mate often brews up slightly cloudy – don’t worry, it’s supposed to do that!
