Move over, coffee: There’s a new kid in town, and it’s called Mocha Mate. This blend mixes roasted, toasted yerba mate with full-bodied chicory and delicious natural cocoa, kisses it with a hint of cinnamon, and serves up an unforgettable cup. It tastes like the best cafe mocha you’ve ever had, with no acidity or harshness – just a smooth, sweet brew.

Description

Okay, okay, we admit it. Nothing gets the day started like a nice cup of joe. Even here at Tea Noir, where tea is elevated to cultlike obsession, we do like our coffee. It’s just rich and aromatic and full of that caffeinated goodness.

There’s a new kid in town, though, and it’s called Mocha Mate. This blend mixes roasted, toasted yerba mate with full-bodied chicory and delicious natural cocoa, kisses it with a hint of cinnamon, and serves up an unforgettable cup.

This is a wonderful, aromatic, full-bodied brew that goes down incredibly smoothly – never any bitterness, no matter how long you steep it. It really does taste like the best cafe mocha you’ve ever had, with absolutely no acidity or harshness like you get with coffee (although it is pretty strongly caffeinated).

Mocha Mate brews up a rich, smooth, and fragrant cup. The brew is VERY cloudy, thanks to the natural cocoa mixed liberally with the mate leaves, but don’t worry! It’ll taste great – it’s just not as pretty in the pot or cup as some of our other brews. There will also be a bit of sediment at the bottom of your cup – you can swirl this up with the last sip and drink it (the dregs are delicious and nutritious, too – mate is packed with vitamins and other beneficial compounds) or just try reading your future in the cocoa and leaves!

It’s great plain, but a hint of cream and sugar takes this drink to whole new levels of deliciousness.

Flavor Profile

Extremely bold, slightly toasty and rich, with a dark chocolatey finish and a hint of cinnamon.

Preparation

Brew with water just off the boil (190-200F) for 3-5 minutes for the first steeping. You can save the leaves in the fridge for another 1-2 steepings, but you should increase the duration of each and expect the chocolate flavour to diminish each time. Pairs well with sugar, honey, or chocolate syrup, and pairs well with cream.

Ingredients

Roasted yerba mate, chicory, cocoa powder, cinnamon, chocolate chips, natural flavours. Contains milk and soy.

About Yerba Mate

Yerba mate is a South American herb with a wonderfully crisp, herbal, “green” flavour. Because of the particular balance of chemicals in yerba mate, although it contains a good bit of caffeine and gives you a buzz, many people find that the energy they get lasts longer and is gentler than a pure caffeine buzz. You can re-steep yerba mate leaves several times – just keep the leaves in the fridge between brewings, and steep them longer each time, up to 3 times. Mate often brews up slightly cloudy – don’t worry, it’s supposed to do that!
